Presentation and Discussion on Recent and Pending Legislative Changes Affecting Human Resources Professionals

Alec Beck, Partner, Ford & Harrison, LLP and Kate Bischoff, Employment Attorney, tHRive Law and Consulting, LLC and HR Compliance Adjunct Professor, Mitchell Hamline School of Law present the annual Legislative Update.

This is always a lively event, and contains up-to-date information on federal and state legislative changes affecting human resources policies and practices.

Based on feedback from prior sessions, we are allowing 1.5 hours to allow sufficient time for your questions and comments.


Alec J. Beck, Attorney at Law, SPHR
Partner, Ford & Harrison, LLP

Alec Beck has more than twenty years of experience advising and representing employers in labor and employment law. He regularly represents employers in proceedings before state and federal courts, the National Labor Relations Board, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, as well as various other agencies. Since his graduation from law school, Alec has practiced exclusively in the areas of labor relations, employment law, and workers’ compensation. Alec also provides ongoing counsel and training for employers regarding human resource management, employee relations strategies, and the avoidance of employment-related disputes and liability.

Alec is a frequent lecturer on labor and employment matters at seminars, training conferences, and continuing legal education seminars. He is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources by the Society of Human Resource Managers, serves on both state and local SHRM Council Boards, and is a frequent speaker at SHRM events. He is a member of the Board of Directors of MN SHRM, where he serves as General Counsel to the Executive Board. He is a former Chair of the Minnesota Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Section, and was a contributing author to the Section’s Newsletter for five years.


Kate Bischoff, JD, SHRM-SCP, SPHR
Employment Attorney, tHRive Law and Consulting, LLC and HR Compliance Adjunct Professor, Mitchell Hamline School of Law

An enthusiastic management-side attorney and SHRM-SCP/SPHR-certified human resources professional, Kate Bischoff advises organizations in a wide range of industries on employment law and human resources issues, from recruitment and workplace culture to terminations. Her strengths include ensuring human resources policies and practices are compliant with federal and state laws, training employees and managers on equal employment opportunity and other supervisory topics, and handling investigations into employee grievances and complaints. Ms. Bischoff’s passionate about improving company culture and using technology (social media and data analytics) in the workplace.

After several employment law trials, she speaks from experience when advising clients when administrative and court matters commence. Prior to founding tHRive Law & Consulting, Ms. Bischoff served as a human resources officer for the United States Department of State at the U.S. Embassy Lusaka, Zambia and for the U.S. Consulate General Jerusalem.
